Screencasting Software

We have been learning about Screencasting and screencasting software for the past couple weeks in MLIS 7510. According to our course content overview last week, screencasting is, "digital recording of computer screen output, also known as a video screen capture, often containing audio narration."

Screencasting can be used for a variety of purposes within the library. All types of library tutorials, such as job training videos for library or database tutorials for patrons, can be made using screencasting software and posted on the library website.

Our assignment this week was to use a screencasting software such as Jing or Camtasia to create a user guide for a specific library process. I chose to use the free trial version of Camtasia by Tech Smith to create a user guide for a basic and advanced search in ProQuest Research Library. The tutorials for this program were extremely helpful as the user interface is not self-explanatory. Once the tutorials were viewed, however, it made sense and was quite easy to use. I recorded my user guide in three or four different pieces so I had to edit them together and edit out other verbal errors. I also went back through and added a highlighted cursor, some annotation arrows to help point out important things, and a contact info box at the end.

Overall I learned a ton this week and I highly recommend Camtasia to anyone needing to create tutorial videos in the library and beyond.

I look forward to using Camtasia to create screencasts for the library I work for in the near future!
